We are on day 2 in Guatemala and are not disappointed. This morning we had a wonderful breakfast of eggs, beans, roasted plantains, pineapple, and banana smoothies prepared by Renate and Sarita, the owners of the guesthouse we stayed at. After breakfast, Renate took us on a hike behind his house to a viewpoint that overlooked Lake Peten. Then we were off to Tikal, one of the most important Mayan sites in Guatemala. It is now a huge national park, and we spent a long, hot day hiking through the jungle to various Mayan ruins. In the meantime, we saw coati, wild pigs, a wild turkey, and spider monkeys. We heard the loud, dinosaur-like calls of Howler monkeys all afternoon, but didn't see any. Perhaps another day.
Highlight of the day for Evan: climbing to the top of one of the temples for a picture with Mom.
Highlight of the day for Nathan: ordering pizza for dinner.

View of Flores from our guesthouse room. Hard to believe that we were in such a remote village when this is just across the lake.

Different highlights for different people on different days.
ReplyDeleteMy highlight is waking each morning of retirement and seeing what my family did the day before on vacation. I hope Nathan enjoyed his pizza!
